People who live near hazardous waste sites, people who live near mines, people who work in the phosphate industry, people who eat crops grown on contaminated soil or people who drink water from a uranium waste disposal point may experience a higher exposure than other people. Shocking but true – Depleted Uranium can cause multiple cancers in one person

This is a report of Dr. Jawad Al-Ali (55), director of the Oncology Center at the largest hospital in Basra, Iraq stated, at 2003 conference in Japan. Two strange phenomena have come about in Basra which was never seen before.

The first is double and triple cancers in one patient i.e., leukemia and cancer of the stomach. They had a patient with 2 cancers - one in his stomach and other is in kidney. Months later, primary cancer was developing in his another kidney too --he had three different cancer types.

The second strange phenomenon was the clustering of cancer in families. They had 58 families there with more than one person affected by cancer. Dr Yasin, a general Surgeon here has two uncles, a sister and cousin affected with cancer and Dr Mazen, another specialist, has six family members suffering from cancer. Also Dr. Jawad wife has nine members of her family with cancer.

"Children in particular are susceptible to Depleted Uranium poisoning since, they have a much higher absorption rate as their blood is being used to build and nourish their bones and they have a lot of soft tissues. Possible ways for Humans exposed to Uranium are:

• Inhaling of air or drinking water in a place that has higher than background levels of uranium.

• Taking food substances grown in areas with higher than background levels of uranium.

• Working in factories that process uranium or with phosphate fertilizers, or living near any kind of mine or living near a coal-fired power plant.

Humans and animals exposed to high levels of uranium do not have higher cancer rates. The Committee on the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation (BEIR IV) reported that consumption of food or drinking water that has normal amounts of uranium will most likely not
cause cancer.

Uranium can decay into other radioactive substances, such as radium, which can cause cancer if you are exposed to enough of them for a long sufficient period of time. Studies have reported that the lung and other cancers in uranium miners; however, the miners also smoked and were exposed to other substances that cause cancer, such as radon and silica dust.
