Korea's Uranium Weapon Test: Hecker

According to U.S. nuclear scientist, North Korea may detonate a uranium-based bomb when it carries out its next nuclear test, estimating that the country may have developed one or two uranium bombs. The widely-respected nuclear weapons expert, who previously worked for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the national U.S. nuclear developer, has made several trips to North Korea that included access to some of the country's key nuclear amenities.

Global concern has spiked sharply in recent weeks after North Korea effectively fired off a long-range rocket that can reach as far as the U.S. continent. The country is now threatening to conduct its third nuclear test. South Korean and U.S. officials say that North Korea is strictly ready to conduct a nuclear test at any time pending the approval from its top leader, Kim Jong-un.

Hecker supposed that the coming test, if conducted, may have political repercussions for the already isolated country, It cost them a political price particularly not only with U.N. sanctions but also with the disapproval of China.

The government's decision to go ahead with a new, but as yet approximate, nuclear missile system will be subjected to unprecedented self-governing scrutiny by a group of senior defence, diplomatic, scientific, and political figures. The new Trident commission will be headed by the former Labour defense secretary, Lord Browne, the former traditional defence secretary, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, and the former Lib Dem defence spokesman, Sir Menzies Campbell. The government has determined to put off a decision on the shape and size of a new nuclear weapons system until 2015, as division of the coalition agreement, after the next general election is due.

It also comes at a time more and more foremost establishment figures, such as the former US secretary of state and national security adviser, Henry Kissinger, say they are becoming increasingly anxious about nuclear proliferation, sources concerned in setting up the commission said. Other member of the group include Lord Guthrie, the former chief of defence staff, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, UK ambassador at the UN at the occasion of the invasion of Iraq, and Professor Sir Martin Rees, former Astronomer Royal and President of the Royal Society. They were all explain yesterday as having an "open mind" about whether Britain should carry on to possess nuclear weapons, and if so, how they would be delivered.

"This is the first time in a extremely long time that we have had a wholesale review of nuclear weapons policy", Campbell said. He added: "It is high time it was subjected to rigorous analysis". Lord Browne, defence secretary at the time the Labour determined to renew Trident in 2006, said that an independent review was crucial now in light of the government's persistence that the cost of a new nuclear weapons system must come out of the core defence budget. "No one has debate the crash of this on the rest of expenditure on defence", he told the Guardian. In the past, expenses on the nuclear deterrent was in addition to that decided for non-nuclear weapons. Browne attacked the government for not allowing nuclear weapons to be included in its current strategic defence review.

United States help Ukraine send two bombs value of uranium to Russia

The United States has help Ukraine send two atomic bombs worth of weapons grade uranium to Russia through a secret process over the holidays, the Obama administration confirmed Thursday on msnbc's The Rachel Maddow Show. The elimination of more than 111 pounds of highly enriched uranium followed a pledge by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to obtain rid of all of his country's extremely enriched uranium by April 2012.

"The Ukraine, they recognize they’re division of the international community, they know how dangerous this material is," Thomas D’Agistino, head of the National Nuclear Security Administration, tell Maddow. The material will be blend down in Russia, representation it useless for bomb making, the connected Press said. Yanukovych decided to give up the uranium in a multinational contract announced at a nuclear security summit hosted by President Barack Obama in April.

Shipments like the one just finished from Serbia result in permanent threat reduction because they remove weapons-usable nuclear material at civilian sites. Securing the amterial will avoid it from lessening into the wrong hands, officials say. As an inducement, the United States is given that replacement low-enriched uranium that can be used for Ukraine's research reactors. The summit contract also has the United States construction a $25 million "neutron source facility" nuclear research project for Ukraine, the administration said. The facility will be capable to make 50 different types of medical isotopes, using only low enriched uranium.

N. Korea lays responsibility for its uranium enrichment project on United States

North Korea tried Wednesday to validate its newly unveiled uranium enrichment actions, saying its nuclear deadlock with the United States would not have turned "difficult" had Washington follow through with its 1994 pledge to build light-water reactors for Pyongyang. The U.S. in 2002 balanced the creation of two 1,000-megawatt light-water reactors in North Korea after accusing Pyongyang of running a secret uranium program in a bid to construct nuclear warheads.

The Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the North's ruling Workers' Party, said the nuclear condition on the Korean Peninsula "would not have been as complex as it is now had the U.S. finished the construction and handed over the key" for the reactors. North Korea told visit U.S. scholars final month that it was working thousands of current centrifuges and building a light-water reactor at its main nuclear complex in Yongbyon. Centrifuges are use to enrich uranium, which can be twisted into weapons if highly enriched. Light water reactors use low enriched uranium to make energy.

Reiterating its claim that its uranium enrichment is for peaceful energy utilize, the North claim through the party every day that cooperation over such development is "an unstoppable tendency" around the world, hinting at its willingness to extend the technology. "The issue of nuclear energy growth and use is particularly drawing keen interest from developing countries whose economies have been prohibited from normal development by imperialists," the editorial said.

Iran has begun secret negotiations with Turkey and three further countries to submit significant amounts of its uranium stockpile and cease enrichment in swap for an end to international sanctions, the Daily Telegraph reported Thursday. According to the British daily’s statement, the Turkish led contract calls on Iran to ship roughly 1,000 kilograms of its low enriched uranium, as well as its whole 30 kilogram stockpile of 20 percent enriched uranium, to a secure location.

In return, France and Russia will give readymade fuel rods for the medical isotope reactor for which Iran says it has been enriching uranium to 20 percent a stage which halves the time needed to produce weapons rating material. In exchange, the international community would agree to end allow that have crippled the country’s economy, the daily said. France, Russia and the United States have been concerned in the negotiations, which began after a gathering between Ahmed Davutoglu, Turkey’s foreign minister, and Iranian officials in Bahrain previous this month, the daily statement, cite anonymous diplomatic sources.
