New centralized uranium storage facility opens in US

The National Nuclear Security Administration speaks it has certified the start-up of the new Highly Enriched Uranium Resources Facility.

NNSA officials thought that the opening of the "ultra-secure" warehouse facility at the Y-12 National Security Complex next to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee marks a chief milestone in its efforts to create a contemporary, 21st century nuclear security enterprise.

The $549 million facility is considered as the Y-12's largest construction project in more than 40 years. It is planned to merge enriched uranium storage into a single state-of-the-art facility that decreases operating costs and improves security, competence and operations, officials said.

The enriched uranium is to be stored at the facility will be used for "preserving the U.S. nuclear prevention and as source of fuel for the Naval Reactors program." Additional uses of the material contain down-blended fuel for commercial, research or medical isotope production reactors.
